Roots of Time
Where Roots and Stone Tell a Story
Tank Size: 120x45x45 cm Low Iron Tank
Style: Diorama, Bonsai
Hardscape: Riverstone, Root Bundles
The Client Request
A client approached us with a request to redesign his existing 120 × 45 × 45 cm aquarium. The previous setup, while visually impressive, had become difficult to maintain over time. His goal was simple: create a clean, natural aquascape that would be easier to care for while still maintaining a strong visual presence in his living space.
After reviewing the tank and discussing his preferences, the client shared inspiration from a layout we previously created featuring Mi Nuong branches rising above the waterline. He wanted a similar concept — a nature-inspired design that felt organic, calm, and minimal.

Initial Design Proposal
This design recreates a natural riverside scene inside the aquarium. A large driftwood structure forms the centerpiece, appearing like an ancient tree rooted into a rocky riverbank, with Mi Nuong branches extending above the waterline. River stones and sand create a gentle stream path that adds depth and movement while keeping the layout simple and easy to maintain.
Building the Hardscape Layout
We arrived on site around 1:00 PM and began by thoroughly cleaning the aquarium to remove any debris and prepare the tank for the new layout. Once the glass and base were ready, we started building the hardscape by carefully positioning the main stone structures and driftwood elements.
For this design, we used natural river stones as the primary rock formation, complemented by Seiryu stones that were reused from the client’s existing setup. This allowed us to incorporate familiar materials while reshaping them into a new composition.
To add character and natural movement to the layout, we introduced locally sourced driftwood and root bundles, creating the impression of tree roots gripping onto the rocky riverbank. The base of the scape was finished using GA Riverstream Pebbles, providing a natural substrate that enhances the look of a flowing riverbed and ties the entire landscape together.
This stage focused on establishing the core structure and balance of the aquascape, forming the foundation for the planting and final details that would follow.
Planting Phase
With the hardscape structure in place, we proceeded with the planting stage, focusing on a layout that would remain simple, natural, and easy to maintain, as requested by the client due to a busy schedule.
The plant selection was carefully chosen for durability and low maintenance. We used Homonoia riparia to create the effect of riverside vegetation extending above the waterline, giving the aquascape a natural riparian look. To complement the rocky structure, Java Fern Broad Leaf and Java Fern Narrow Leaf were placed around the driftwood and stones, adding depth and texture without requiring intensive care.
For finer details, Christmas Moss was attached to selected areas of the hardscape to soften the composition and enhance the natural appearance of aged roots and stones.
This combination of hardy plants allows the aquarium to maintain a lush and natural aesthetic while remaining manageable for long-term upkeep, even without complex maintenance routines.
Completed Layout

PROJECT SUMMARY:
Roots of Time is a nature-inspired aquascape designed for a 120cm aquarium, centered around the image of an ancient tree gripping onto a rocky riverbank. The composition features layered river stones, natural driftwood, and exposed root structures that create the feeling of a weathered landscape shaped over time.
Low-maintenance plants such as Homonoia riparia, Java Fern, and Christmas moss were carefully placed to enhance the natural look while keeping the setup simple and practical for long-term care. The result is a calm riverside scene that blends rugged rock formations with flowing root structures, capturing the timeless beauty of nature within the aquarium.
