Java Fern - Broad Leaf
Java Fern ‘Broad Leaf’ (Microsorum pteropus)
Java Fern ‘Broad Leaf’ is a hardy and popular aquarium plant known for its wide, deep green leaves and strong, upright growth. Compared to the standard Java Fern, this variety features broader foliage that creates a bold and lush look in planted aquariums.
This plant grows from a creeping rhizome and adapts well to a wide range of aquarium conditions, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquascapers. It thrives when attached to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape where its leaves can grow naturally and provide structure to the aquascape.
Care Tips
Lighting: Low to Medium
CO₂: Not required
Placement: Midground to Background (attached to hardscape)
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
Propagation: New plantlets form on older leaves or by dividing the rhizome
Aquascaping Notes
Java Fern ‘Broad Leaf’ is ideal for nature-style aquascapes, low-tech planted tanks, and shrimp aquariums. Its wide leaves create strong visual structure and pair beautifully with mosses, Anubias, and driftwood layouts.
⚠️ Important: Do not bury the rhizome in the substrate. Attach the plant to rocks or driftwood using aquascaping glue or thread to prevent rhizome rot.
Please note that leaf size and shape may vary slightly as these are natural aquatic plants.
