Anubias
Anubias is one of the most popular plant groups in the aquarium hobby, valued for its durability, slow growth, and beautiful deep green leaves. Native to Africa, Anubias species are known for their thick rhizomes and hardy foliage, making them an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquascapers.
Unlike many aquatic plants, Anubias does not need to be planted in substrate. Instead, it thrives when attached to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape, where its rhizome can grow freely while producing new leaves over time. Because of its strong leaves and low maintenance requirements, it is ideal for low-tech aquariums, shrimp tanks, and aquascapes with fish that may nibble on softer plants.
Anubias varieties come in many shapes and sizes, from miniature species perfect for nano aquariums to larger varieties suitable for midground and background placements. Their slow growth also makes them less demanding in terms of trimming and maintenance.
